Hayfever injection

Kenalog is a long-acting corticosteroid injection (containing triamcinolone acetonide) sometimes used to provide relief from severe hayfever symptoms when other treatments haven’t been effective. It works by reducing inflammation in the body, thereby alleviating sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and other allergic reactions. It’s a single intramuscular injection intended to provide relief for several weeks or even the entire hayfever season for some individuals.

Aftercare

Following a Kenalog injection, aftercare is generally straightforward:

Keep the injection site clean and dry

Avoid touching or rubbing the area unnecessarily for a few hours to minimize the risk of infection.

Avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for 24-48 hours

This can help reduce any potential discomfort or irritation at the injection site.

Monitor for any signs of infection

at the injection site, such as increasing pain, redness, swelling, or pus. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice any of these signs.

Be aware of potential side effects

While generally well-tolerated, Kenalog can have side effects. These can include temporary pain or bruising at the injection site, facial flushing, and rarely, more serious side effects. Discuss potential side effects with your doctor and know when to seek medical advice.

Do not massage the injection site

This is generally not recommended.

Important Note: Kenalog is a potent medication and is not suitable for everyone. It’s usually reserved for severe cases of hayfever and requires a thorough consultation with a healthcare professional to assess suitability, discuss potential risks and benefits, and ensure it’s the right treatment option for you.
